We are proud to present our first full annual report of our activities between 2021 and 2022. The 1 September 2022 marked 7 years since the National Mikey Powell Memorial Family Fund (NMPMFF) was founded, and just over 2 years since our first ever funding round.

Founder, Tippa Naphtali, said; "We are the only organisation nationally that occupies this space, and are therefore absolutely unique and bespoke".

The Fund is the first permanent national resource of its kind for those affected by deaths in custody, making small grants available for families and their campaign groups across the UK to provide practical domestic assistance, to further the work of their own campaigns or to assist them in engaging in other local, regional or national campaigns, events and initiatives.

A key supporter of the NMPMFF, Ken Fero of award winning Migrant Media said;

"The public awareness and support after the killing of George Floyd [in 2020] had strengthened this initiative which improves the lives of families impacted by state violence in the UK. We support this important grassroots initiative and urge others to join. When the state fails us, the people must act in unity".

In April 2021 we announced ambitious plans for the future. This report provides details of what the Fund was able to achieve with the grant aid, donations and voluntary input we have received, as well as several significant developments over the past year, and our continued work against our 5-year plan and other developments including;

  • Core and project funding from Black Lives Matter UK and the national charity, INQUEST
  • Our mix of income generation and appeals for new donors to support our work
  • Outline of the establishment of the Annual Gala Dinner & Awards initiative as part of a wider set of aspirational projects
  • New central and project management and coordination salaried and sessional staff members
  • A feature on our inaugural event, 'Looking Back Moving Forward' held in September 2021
  • Launches of the Crisis Fund, Legacy Fund and Two-Way Give-Back eShop
  • Updates on grants and gift schemes awarded to affected families

The report also sets out our income & expenditure for 2021-2022, our forward thinking Work Plan and a summary of our partners, collaborators and donors.

The Fund is already making a practical difference to families and their campaign groups that need financial and wellbeing support during their long struggles for justice lasting decades in many cases.

It is our absolute and undivided commitment that this work should be continued indefinitely, and will maintain our momentum in this respect.
